This Patriotic Toast is an all-in-one-breakfast that includes your toast and fruit for an easy, yet festive, way to start off your morning. Free of gluten, dairy, egg, soy, peanut and tree nuts this will help just about anyone rise and shine.
How Patriotic Toast Came to be:
As I’ve mentioned on my Instagram (are we friends yet??) I’m definitely not crafty. One time, I tried to buy a hot glue gun and I bought the wrong sized glue, so it didn’t even fit in the gun–that’s how special I am when it comes to doing cutesy things. So, believe-you-me that if I can make toast that resembles the great American flag–so can you!
My oldest child, the one with EOE (eosinophilic esophagitis), has a hard time eating breakfast. I’m sure part of it has to do with the very limited options he has. When you can’t do most cereals, most yogurts, most breads or eggs it leaves little choices. So, I was excited to present him with something eye catching that included some calories (vegan butter), fruit and some carbs all in an easy, portable finger food. Hello KID FRIENDLY!
I’m especially needing easy foods right now because I just got back from camping with girls ages 12-16. Yes, you read that right. I’m tired and smell like smoke and dirt. I am certifiably crazy because I volunteer with my church, and once a year we take the young women camping. It is actually pretty fun. It’s nice to be out in nature, go hiking and get away from electronics for a while. And, the best part–not having to cook. Since I have no food allergies, I was able to just stand in the mess hall and eat whatever they threw at me. It was nice!
Don’t worry though, before I left, I was sure to make a meal plan for my husband (that included Chik-Fil-A) and stock the pantry. In fact, I did a Facebook Live video from the grocery store right before I got my shopping on. The boys had a safe time, I had a safe time and we all survived! WIN!
I loved this Patriotic Toast from the minute I saw something similar on Pinterest–and I just knew it would be so fun around the 4th of July. If your 4th is anything like ours, we’re mad-dashing out of the house to try and make it to the parade in time. No fail, every year, we barely find a seat before the beginning band rounds the corner, so we definitely need something fast and filling for breakfast that fits our crazy allergies.
I hope you enjoy this Patriotic Toast before, during, or after the 4th as a fun way to jazz up your regular morning routine. God bless ‘MERICA.
What gluten free bread to use for the patriotic toast:
For a safe bread, my son does Ener-G. He’s liked the brown rice loaf, tapioca loaf, and white rice loaf. I find the brown rice flavor to be sturdier. It’s the only bread I’ve found he can have. While I wouldn’t particularly love to eat it, since he’s never had any other kind of bread, he likes it. (#honest) He regularly has toast and sandwiches with it. I would just recommend toasting it well before, and that really helps the texture. While I’ve heard some people complain about it, I applaud them for making a loaf of bread out of so few ingredients.
My husband and youngest like Franz, that is dairy free and gluten free, or Canyon Bakehouse which is also dairy and gluten free. We just can’t do either of those for my oldest son since they both have eggs.
And lastly, another food-allergy momma has recommended Schar bread, but my son cannot do some of the grains they use.
UPDATE: A new bread that we have found that has become our favorite is Little Northern Bakehouse!
What dairy free butter to use for the patriotic toast:
For our vegan butter, we use Earth Balance Buttery Spread. Please note that this does include soybean oil. Even before we knew my son could handle soy with his EOE, we felt OK letting him have soy oil, as stated here. That said–if you have an official soy allergy, only follow the advice of your physician, not some blog. 🙂
If you can’t have soy, we also have enjoyed Earth Balance Coconut Spread too!
I hope that helps you find bread and butter you can safely enjoy for this recipe. Please note–there has been so compensation or sponsorship to mention these brands, but brands–if you’re reading this–I’d love to work with you!! (Cough, cough, hint, hint, wink, wink.)
However, I did link to a few on Amazon, as I am an Amazon affiliate (and am addicted to Amazon Prime myself). If you choose to purchase them through the links provided, I will receive a small percentage which helps run my blog, but it will not incur any costs to you–thanks!

*Please note I have not called any of these facilities to find out their cross-contamination procedures. If your allergies are severe enough, you will always need to do your own research–just plan on it. You should never take anyone’s word for it–that is the price of food allergies. I have only gone strictly off of the labels. Also, manufacturing processes, or ingredients may change at any time, so always do your own due diligence! OK? OK. Thanks.*
